
MUMBAI, DECEMBER 11: Union Minister of State for Defence Harin Pathak who was in Thane today announced an ambitious plan for the modernisation of the 39 ordnance factories in the country. quot;We have learnt some very tough lessons in Kargil and the government will remember them,quot; he told mediapersons while outlining plans for the modernisation.
According to him the entire process will cost Rs 1,500 crore and will have to be completed by 2007 in order that the supplies to the services are not affected.
quot;In spite of the Kargil conflict our productivity is only 65-70 per cent of what it should be,quot; he informed and added, quot;we are trying to get it increased to 80 per cent even before the modernisation begins.quot; The Minister who visited the Ambernath ordnance factory before coming to Thane announced that the Ambernath factory would be modernised as model for the other 38 factories to emulate.
quot;We will pursue the modernisation work here, which will cost Rs 90 crore, vigorously and it will be completed before2003,quot; he said. Pathak was in Thane on an invitation from Thane Lok Sabha MP Prakash Paranjape and Rajya Sabha MP Satish Pradhan who had requested his initiative in getting the imbroglio over the Thane Central ground resolved. The ground which belongs to the Ministry of Defence is used as a playground and the local populace has resisted all moves by the the MoD to reclaim it.
