VADODARA, Dec 7: The Opposition councillors of the Vadodara Municipal Corporation stalled work on the Makarpura Road on Monday alleging that materials used were not as per specification.
Congress leader Kanchanbhai Parmar, councillors Chinnam Gandhi and Nandu Pardeshi prevented the contractor from carrying out work on the Makarpura Model Road. Gandhi alleged that the contractor was mixing 50 per cent quarry in the grit.
He claimed that they later stopped the contractor from removing rubble from the road near the university pavilion, which is being widened. According to him, the contractor wanted to get rid of the rubble to prevent being caught, and was taking advantage of the inaction on the part of the authorities in the past two days. He said though the issue was brought to the mayor8217;s notice, no concrete action was initiated except for asking the administration to conduct an inquiry.
The move comes two days after Gandhi had alleged at a press conference that there were irregularities in the laying of model roads and sub-standard material was being used. He had alleged that some councillors were hand-in-glove with the contractors and demanded that they be blacklisted. Following the move, Mayor Bharati Vyas along with the councillors went to the site on Monday evening, but as it was dark, they decided to visit it again on Tuesday morning.
Licenced plumbers: Licenced plumbers of the VMC will now be able to give water and drainage connections at zone levels instead of ward levels. This follows a representation by the Vadodara City Plumber Association. Some time ago, a section of ruling BJP councillors had also taken up the matter with Municipal Commissioner G R Aloria stating that plumbers be allowed to operate from the zone levels for people8217;s convenience.
The councillors had said that the earlier system had limited their scope and not many persons could be benefitted. The plumbers had also moved the High Court in the context. Following an oral order, the municipal commissioner heard association representatives.
In a notificiation issued recently, Aloria has stated that a plumber would be required to take permission from the deputy municipal commissioner of the particular zone for carrying out work in another zone. In a bid to ensure that quality work is carried out, the plumbers will have to submit a written undertaking to the VMC. The list of plumbers have been put up in the zone offices.
Drive successful: More than 100 per cent success was achieved in the Pulse Polio Immunisation Programme carried out in the city limits by the VMC along with support of voluntary organisations on Sunday. More than 2,000 civic workers were helped by Nehru Bhavan, students of Master of Social Work and National Service Scheme, and students of Homeopathic and the Baroda Medical College, among others.
