The police call him the mastermind of several terror attacks; family and friends describe him as a quiet man who rarely left his house.

The family of Sadiq Sheikh said he had never been out of their sight 8212; except for the past four days. The third of four brothers, Sadiq is part of a joint family that includes his elderly parents, wife and three children, along with the brothers8217; families. The family lives at Cheetah Camp.

8220;Four days ago, Sadiq had told us he was going out for a job interview. The next day, he called a couple of times, but for three days, there have been no calls,8221; said Mohammed Asad, Sadiq8217;s elder brother. That was the only time he has ever been away from home, he said.

As he spoke, Sadiq8217;s wife, Suraiya Bano looked dazed as she sat with her children, two-year-old Aasra and year-old twins Rehma and Sana. Sadiq8217;s mother Aasia 58 is a heart patient; his father Israr Ahmed 62 is an asthmatic.

8220;All the years we have been here, neither I nor any of my sons was ever involved with the police in any way,8221; said Israr Ahmed, who runs a grocery store.

Neighbour Zubeida Bano said, 8220;Our families have known each other for several years. Sadiq has always been a quiet, silent boy who used to go to work, come home, and keep to himself. Over the years, the family won a lot respect, which has wiped out in an instant.8221;

The two-storey house, where the family has lived since 1976, was crowded with friends and neighbours, few of whom were convinced by the terror charge. 8220;When he hasn8217;t been away from us ever, how can the police accuse him of planning such an elaborate attack? Such crimes need planning, time and money. If he was that rich, then the family would not have been living in such squalour,8221; said Sharifa Sahebjan, another neighbour.
