Muffled Voices Women in Indian Theatre
Edited by Lakshmi Suramanyam
Har-Anand Publications, price: Rs 395

THE essays examine the image of women in theatre 8212; through female characters in texts by male playwrights and through the diverse voices of women practitioners themselves. H.S. Shiva Prakash looks at the stereotyping of women in Kannada theatre. For women practitioners like Amal Allana and B. Jayashree, on the other hand, theatre becomes an extension of their selves. By poising gender as the central discourse, the book eventually sets out to define what constitutes the modern Indian sensibility in theatre. And comes up with some interesting answers in the process.

The Truth Almost About Bharat
By Kavery Nambisan
Penguin India, price: Rs 150

Don8217;t let the poetic thoughts on children lead you into believing the novel is a tough ride. Far from the truth. The almost novel is a smooth, breezy read, whizzing you on a 100 cc bike through two parts. The first begins in a college mess and gets our protagonist Vishu aka Bharat aka Tarzan into a total mess. The second deals with the mess Bharat is running away from 8212; a journey that takes you from a Robinhood to a secular doctor three wives of three religions to an independent politician who wants animals in Parliament and back home. Great mileage. All this and more in 132 pages.
