If it’s cricket that can help bring India and Pakistan closer, it’s golf in the case of India and Bangladesh. This seemed to sum up the mood of officers from the Border Security Force and their counterparts from Bangladesh Rifles as they descended on the BSF golf course on the outskirts of Delhi as part of what was described as a “confidence-building measure”. The occasion was the bi-annual meeting on coordination between the two border forces last week. The BSF team led by its Director General A K Mitra took on the BDR golfers headed by its DG, Major General Shakil Ahmed, at the 18-hole course. At stake was the BSF-BDR Gold Trophy, which the hosts won. An officer pointed out that the idea came from the BDR chief at the last meeting in Dhaka. One hopes some of the camaraderie seen on the golf course rubs off on the personnel who actually man the border on either side.
