CHANDIGARH, Aug 5: Guru Gobind Singh Foundation chairman Jasbir Singh Ahluwalia today said the design of the Nishan-e-Khalsa to be erected at Anandpur Sahib was sacrilege and violation of the Sikh tradition, Sikh motif and Sikh symbolism.
Talking to the media persons here, Ahluwalia, who is a member of the Anandpur Sahib Foundation engaged in the task of tricentenary celebrations of the birth of the Khalsa in April, 1999, said the central piece of the design symbolised the sacramental Khanda-Bata motif, a high rise double edged weapon standing erect in a bowl of sacred nectar. He said sacrilege had been committed by turning the Khanda upside down with its handle touching the bowl while it should have been the other way round.
He said more, the approved design was a poor copy of the three-dimensional 66-foot high Khanda erected by the Namdharis at Malerkotla as part of the Kuka memorial.
Ahluwalia demanded that the design of the Nishan-e-Khalsa should be scrapped immediately.
He said the design had been approved without referring it to the general body of the Anandpur Sahib Foundation. He alleged global tenders had been invited for the construction of Nishan-e-Khalsa, estimated to cost about Rs. 35 crore, as well as for the museum, without the approval of the Foundation which had not met even once.
Ahluwalia said he along with two other scholars, J.S.Grewal, former Vice-Chancellor, Guru Nanak Dev University and Dr. Balkar Singh of the Punjabi University had jointly given in writing that they would not attend the meeting of the core group of scholars tomorrow as the committee had not been formally constituted.
