MUMBAI, OCT 11: The much-touted night-sweeping at select places in the city was inaugurated on Sunday night by Mayor Hareshwar Patil outside the civic headquarters.

At the stroke of 11 pm, important civic functionaries gathered for what they called a 8220; momentous event8221; for the city even as Patil and Municipal Commissioner K Nalinakshan symbolically swept the pavements. Addressing civic workers and representatives of the Conservancy Department, Patil said, 8220;The responsibility of the city8217;s cleanliness lies with you and all of us. With the cooperation of citizens, the problem of keeping the city clean will be solved.8221;

The majority of the city8217;s garbage is generated around railway stations, hospitals, cinema houses, markets, bus stations and other crowded areas. However, in the daytime, the crowds inadvertently obstruct civic workers, making it almost impossible for them to clean the streets. The BMC has identified 76 railway stations, 57 markets, 47 hospitals and 224 other sites which will be cleanedbetween 11pm and 5am.

About 500 sweepers aged less than 45 have been deployed for the task. They will work for six hours instead of nine as earlier. To avoid accidents, their uniforms will bear radium stripes. The city will also be swept by workers in two shifts, from 7 am to 2 pm and 2 pm to 9 pm.
