The National Highways Authority of India NHAI on Wednesday decided to set up a two-member committee to probe into the shortcoming in the construction of the flyover that collapsed on Tuesday. Thenbsp;committee comprisesnbsp;Professor A K Nagpal, Head ofnbsp;Department of Civil Engineering, IIT-Delhi, and Mahesh Tandon, Managing Director of Tandon Consultant Private Limited, New Delhi.

Officials said the committee will check the design of thenbsp;flyover for any inadequacy, leading to the accident. Experts will test the quality of the material used in the construction. nbsp;

NHAI General Manager R B Sinha has asked the committee to suggest remedial measures and additional safety measures in order to prevent the recurrence of such incidents. The committee has been asked tonbsp;submit itsnbsp;report within 21 days.

NHAI Project Director M K Jain said the committee will visit Lucknow this week to initiate the inquiry.

About the cause of accident, Jain said: 8220;Prima facie, it appears that thenbsp;bearings of the girder hadnbsp;slipped, leading to the crash. But the exact causenbsp;would be knownnbsp;after thenbsp;report of the investigation agency.8221;

The flyovernbsp;was being constructed by the Hindustan Construction Company HCC.nbsp;Jain said action may be taken against HCC if any irregularity wasnbsp;reported from their side in the investigation.nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;

Meanwhile, the HCC has announced compensations for the victims. 8220;We declare a compensation of Rs 1 lakh to the next of the kin of each deceased and Rs 25,000 to each injured person,8221; said U Bhattacharya, project manager of the HCC.
