Weekly off to minimise losses
Keeping in view daily power breakdowns in Industrial Area, the Chamber of Chandigarh Industries has decided to keep weekly off which will be beneficial both to the industrialists and electricity department in removing voltage fluctuations, causing huge loss to the industrial production. The president S.L. Sethia said frequent breakdowns were caused due to interruption in power supply.

Open at least one PU hostel mess: AISF
The campus unit of All India Students Federation (AISF) today submitted a memorandum to the university authorities asking for more facilities for hostel students. The president of the unit, Sham Sunder said they were demanding that one of the hostel mess should remain open during the vacations. They are also demanding library extension facilities to girl students.

Reinstatement of lecturer welcomed
The Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers’ Union (PCCTU) has welcomed the reinstatement of Prof Surinder Kaur, lecturer in physical education at Dev Samaj College for Women, Sector 45. Dr Rabinder Nath Sharma, president of Chandigarh unit of PCCTU thanked the secretary of Dev Samaj Council for his personal intervention in getting the termination revoked.

UT powermen seek coolers in offices
UT Powermen Union today threatened to launch a stir if water coolers were not provided in the offices of the Electricity Department. According to general secretary Bhag Mal Rana, the staff along with the residents visiting the offices were encountering problems due to non-availability of drinking water.

Pay hike demanded
A de[utation of UT Subordinate Services Federation met Deputy Commissioner K.K. Khandelwal seeking fulfilment of their long pending demands. According to a press release, the demands included filling up of market committee secretary’s post, release of pension scheme and revised pay scales.

SBI donates van
A mobile medicare van equipped with full-fledged dispensary was donated today to a Jammu-based Help Age India by the Chandigarh circle of State Bank of India. The Chief Manager of the bank, K.K. Narula said the van would be providing medical facilities to the elderly in rural and slum areas in Jammu region.

Revised pay sought
Chief engineer R.K. Jain was apprised with the long pending demands of UT Building Maintenance Workers’ Union during a meeting here today. Their demands included filling up of vacant posts, uniforms for field staff and payment of pension to the retired employees.

Excise policy flayed
The Northern India Spices Manufacturers’ Association at its meeting held here today under the chairmanship of Ravi Parkash Kansal has criticised Centre’s budgetary provision of levying excise duty on spices industries.
