Chennai, August 14: The trainees of the National Cricket Academy (NCA), Bangalore and boys from the New Zealand Cricket Academy will participate in the Buchi Babu cricket memorial tournament, starting here on Tuesday.

The NCA boys would be playing their first ever BCCI recognised tournament since its inception on May 1 this year, while New Zealand will be the first overseas team to figure in this prestigious tournament. The former highest wicket taker in Tests, Richard Hadlee, will be the manager, while his brother Doyle will be the coach.

Sponsored by MRF Limited, the tournament has attracted 14 teams and is considered to be the starter for the 2000-2001 cricket season.

Karnataka and Hyderabad had been given byes into the quarterfinals. Each match would be played for three-days and all on turf wickets.

Each team would play a total of 95 overs. In case the team playing second doesn’t get to bat for 95 overs, the run quotient would be applied in the 45th over. If no decision was arrived at even then, the toss of the coin would resolve the issue, Rao said.

The winner would receive Rs 50,000, and the runners-up Rs 25,000 as prize money.

The NCA boys would take on Air India, Delhi, while Tamil Nadu Districts XI will play New Zealand Cricket Academy in the pre-quarterfinals.

Other prominent teams to take part in the tourney, the finals of which is slated for Sept 1 to 3, are: Indian Airlines, New Delhi, MAC-TNCA eleven, Kerala, Jolly Rovers, Chennai, MRF, Associate Bank Cricket Control Board, TNCA President’s Eleven, and Oil and Natural Gas Commission.
