Poor show
The Kusumagraj Pratisthan8217;s Janasthan Award presentation ceremony turned out to be a damp squib which exposed the organisation in bad light.
No speaker bothered to pay homage to the late Gyanpity Award winner Marathi litterateur Vishnu Waman Shirwadkar alias Kusumagraj, despite the fact that it was the first public function of the Pratisthan after his death.
The vice-president of the Pratisthan, Devkisan Sarda, kept goading the Mayor to clear the Kusumgraj memorial project saying that the Mayor would continue her support to the project when in fact the Nashik Municipal Corporation has rejected the State Government8217;s plea to dereserve a plot for the purpose and has invited tenders for constructing a planetarium at the spot. In addition, the audience hooted out poet and critic Chandrakant Patil for his verbosity, but tolerated Amol Palekar8217;s prosaic speech, without a stir, because the latter was an actor.
Strong political ties
Nashik Mayor Dr Shobha Bachhav has proved thatpolitical ties are stronger than the mandatory work of a public office. When the Congress-led coalition decided to form the State Government, Dr Bachhav who belongs to Congress, left all her work, and rushed to Mumbai in a NMC vehicle for the swearing-in ceremony. The same day, some civic contractors staged a dharna at the civic headquarters demanding prompt payment of their bills. But the resource crunch of the NMC did not deter the Mayor from proving her political loyalty.
