The Pune city police arrested two persons in connection with the murder of a 34-year-old year, who was allegedly killed over his interfaith-relationship with the sister of one of the accused.
Police have identified the accused as Sandip Rangrao Bhurke (25) and Omprakash alias Datta Ganesh Kirkan (20), both natives of Bhokar in Nanded district of Maharashtra.
Police said the deceased, Javed Pathan, also a native of Bhokar in Nanded, worked at an automobile servicing centre in Ambegaon Budruk in Pune city. He was in a relationship with Bhurke’s sister for the last few years, something that Bhurke did not approve of, said police.
According to police, Bhurke, who worked as a private security guard in Pune, went to meet Pathan, along with his accomplice Kirkan, on the evening of December 22.
Following heated arguments, they attacked Pathan with sharp weapons, causing his death, around 6.45pm. The assailants then fled the spot. Pathan’s relative Rauf Usman Shaikh (35) lodged a complaint at the Ambegaon police station, based on which police registered an FIR for murder and launched a search operation.
Probe revealed that the accused reached their native place in Nanded. Accordingly, a police team, comprising sub- inspector Mohan Kalamkar, constables Chetan More, Nilesh Jamdade and Harish Gaikwad, laid a trap and nabbed the accused from Nanded on Thursday.
Police said Pathan and Bhurke’s sister were living together in the Narhe area of Pune city for a few days. During interrogation, Bhurke confessed to have murdered Pathan as he was against their relationship, said police.
“A court in Pune sent the accused to police custody till January 1 for further investigation,” said Sharad Zine , senior inspector at the Ambegaon police station.
