
NASHIK, May 24: Nashik Municipal Commissioner Baldev Chand yesterday presented the budget for 1997-98, three months behind schedule, proposing a hike in various civic taxes to net Rs 7.07 crore.
Chand proposed to hike the water tax, conservancy tax, street tax and education tax from one per cent to three per cent, and the sewerage tax from one per cent to five per cent.
Accordingly, water supply tax per 1,000 litres would be hiked from Rs 1.50 to Rs 3 for domestic consumers, from Rs 8 to 9 for commercial consumers; and from Rs 8 to 15 for industrial consumers. The budget for 1996-97 showed a surplus of Rs 4.79 crore, with income of Rs 152.46 crore and expenditure of Rs 147.67 crore. Budget estimates for 1997-98 showed a surplus of Rs 44 lakh, with income of Rs 200.49 crore and expenditure of Rs 200.05 crore.
The commissioner proposed to rise Rs 300 crore from financial institutions and public bonds to finance various civic projects in the city including the underground drainage and sewage system.
