Officers with the Sector 43 Crime Branch of the Gurgaon police arrested four people allegedly involved in stealing car tyres from vehicles parked outside various hotels and other places Friday night. The gang had been active for the last three months.
The accused, all currently residing at Jharsa village in the city, have been identified as Rishikesh from Jharsa village in Gurgaon, Arjun, a native of Siwana in Jhajjar; Piyush Rana, who hails from Jodhpur near Panchvati, Palwal, and Tushar Kumar, son of Pawan Kumar, a native of Munger in Bihar.
The four were arrested from Sector-49 by a team led by Inspector Narendra Kumar Sharma following a tip-off. During interrogation, the accused confessed to least 14 tyre theft incidents in Gurgaon. They will be produced before a court on Saturday, where the police will seek their remand for further questioning and for the recovery of the stolen tyres.
The police said the four are childhood friends and studied together. They are currently studying at different colleges: Arjun is pursuing BA-LLB at Baba Mastnath University and owns the blue Fronx car used in the crimes; Rishikesh is preparing for CA; Rana is a BCom student at Gurugram University; and Kumar is pursuing BCom at DSD College, Gurgaon.
“The accused said they used to visit clubs in Sector-29 for parties but, for the past few months, were not getting pocket money from home. To fund their club visits and parties, they started stealing tyres, along with rims, at night from vehicles parked in various sectors and outside hotels. They would park the Fronx next to the target vehicle, use a jack and other tools to remove the tyres, place the car on bricks and flee with the stolen tyres loaded in their vehicle,” crime branch officials said.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Inspector Sharma said they had been probing the car theft cases for the last three to four months. “The accused continued their friendship after school, and did not have the money to party in clubs and hence committed the offences. They would steal from near parks too for quick getaways,” he added.
The probe team comprised Sub-Inspector Sachin, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Satbir, ASI Sunder Lal, Head Constable Pradeep, Constable Ajit Singh, Constable Rohit and Constable Priyank.
