FARZ

Yes I know itacirc;euro;trade;s my farz to review music albums, but at times I feel that there should be some kanoon against some Hindi film soundtracks. Farz is easily one such album. Uttam Singh still attempts to meet the standards he set with Dil To Paagal Hai. There were some sparks of excellence in Dushman, but thatacirc;euro;trade;s about it. Now comes Farz, which is an incredibly average album, with guest appearances by Anu Malik and Aadesh Srivastava.

The stalwart pair, Lata Mangeshkar-Udit Narayan, kicks off the album with a pleasant Dekhen bhi to kya dekhen. Then, Anupama Deshpande renders Bichua bichua and how it is causing havoc to her life. Much like what the album is doing to me. Even a confirmed cheapo like me has to take a rain-check on this one.

The Anu Malik-composed Mohabbat ke din ho by Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik sounds like something he couldnacirc;euro;trade;t plug into a Salman Khan flick. Very average Malik song. Next, hold your breath, comes Har subah yaad rakhna by Mangeshkar and Narayan, with Sunny Deol rattling off some heavy dialogues. This is getting scary, what with all the heroes sprouting shers and shayaris in-between songs. But not even such a heavyweight combo can make you rewind the song.

Sonu Nigam and Anuradha Paudwal sing Jaadoo hai yeh kaisa, which is probably the best song in the album thanks to Mr Nigamacirc;euro;trade;s pure belief in the song, and the zest he sings with. He sings as if this is the best song in his career. Very commendable!

Then comes the cryptic Aelo aelo ji, by Narayan and Yagnik, which clearly suffers from a DTPH hangover. Until now, I havenacirc;euro;trade;t figured out what they say in between. Could someone please tell me! Eventually you come to the song by Aadesh S: Jhanak jhanak baaje, with Sunidhi Chauhan, Richa Sharma and KK the same Kay Kay? belting it out. Quite a chalta hain number!

The final song of the album, Dholan dhola actually dares to rip off the great Khayyam. How can anyone touch Kabhie Kabhie? Now you know why there should be some kanoon against mixing Khayyam with some dil going ghutgoo ghutgoo.

Farz is such a pity, considering itacirc;euro;trade;s coming from Uttam Singh. DTPH was undoubtedly one of the best albums I have ever heard, and even though we donacirc;euro;trade;t expect every subsequent album to attain that height, at least there should be some line of quality else DTPH risks going into that dreaded acirc;euro;oelig;flukeacirc;euro; category. I wouldnacirc;euro;trade;t recommend Farz, barring that one song by Nigam.

Music: Uttam Singh, Anu Malik, Aadesh Srivastava. Tapes/CDs: T-Series
