Book on public opinion

Academician and activist Dr Suresh Mane8217;s book Public Opinion, Law, Judiciary and Reservation Policy was released at a function on Saturday. The recent Supreme Court ruling on reservations, disallowing the same in super-speciality admissions, was at the centre of discussion at the function, with the speakers coming down heavily on the ruling. Justice H Suresh, retd, even stated that the SC had gone down since its golden era in 1975-85. Also, there were provisions in the Constitution authorising the state to ensure adequate representation for the underprivileged, and one had to be 8220;true to the constitution8221;, he said. The SC ruling went against that, he said.

Durga Puja celebrations on Oct 17, 18

Bombay Durgabadi Samiti, the oldest Durga Puja celebrations of South Mumbai, will be celebrating asthami and navami on October 17 and 18 respectively. Aarthi will be at 7.30 pm on both the days followed by cultural programme at 8.15 pm at Tejpal auditorium.

The NorthBombay Sarbajanin Durga Puja will be celebrating its 52nd year of Durga and Kali Puja between 8 and 9 November under the auspices of the Banga Maitri Sansad at the premises of the SR Western Railway Institute, Sen Nagar, Santacruz E.

Association against finance company

An association has been formed by those who had deposited in Alday Cash Bonds of Sol Pharma Ltd to initiate legal proceedings against the company for its failure to repay the Alday Cash Bond Deposits on maturity. The association will be filing a petition before the National Consumers Disputes Redressal Commission to seek refund of the deposits and compensation.

65-year-old shot dead in Bhandup

A 65-year-old railway pensioner was shot dead outside his residence at Bhandup West early this morning. Ramdev Yadav was standing outside his residence at Sukhdev PrasadChawl, Room No 3 near Hanuman Nagar bus stop when two men accosted him. They fired two rounds at him from close range before making their escape. The victim, who was hit behind the head and back, was rushed to Bhandup General Hospital but was declared dead before admission. The motive behind the murder and identity of the hitmen are yet to be established. Police suspect the killing could be a fallout of previous enmity.

Book released in honour of poet

Bechain Rooh Ka Parinda, a book in honour of Padmashree Dr Kanhaiyalal Nandan the eminent Hindi poet and journalist was released at the hands of noted Urdu poet, Ali Sardar Jafri on Saturday. The book is a compilation of more than 50 contributions by personalities as eminent as former prime minister I K Gujral, Gangadhar Gadgil and Kamleshwar. It has been edited by Dr Rajam Pillai. An audio cassette titled Aag Ke Rang was also released at the function.
