Nitin Nabin on Tuesday took charge as the national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the party headquarters in the national capital. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh were among the senior leaders present on the occasion.
Congratulating Nitin Nabin, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was pleased to see him elected as president of the world’s largest political party. He added that the BJP’s organisational elections were conducted in a democratic manner in accordance with the party’s constitution, and said the process reflected the party’s karyakarta-centric ethos.
“You are the president of all of us. His responsibility is not just to serve the BJP but also coordinate with the NDA allies. Whoever has come in contact with Nitin Nabin ji speaks of his simplicity. Be it his responsibility as a prabhari or his experience of working with the Bihar government, Nitin Nabin has proved himself in whatever responsibility he was given,” PM Modi said.
PM Modi further said that the coming 25 years are important and that Viksit Bharat would become a reality in this period of time. “Nitin ji is himself a millennial. He is from the generation that has seen social, technological and economic changes in India. His generation has seen both radio and AI. He has both the energy of youth and also vast experience of organisational work,” Modi said.
Recalling the party’s past leadership, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the BJP’s leadership tradition was rooted in values and enriched by experience, enabling the organisation to move forward with a spirit of service to the nation. He said the party had seen a journey “from zero to the peak”, noting that the BJP secured a majority on its own under Rajnath Singh’s leadership, expanded across several states under Amit Shah, and returned to power for a third term under J P Nadda.
The leadership change comes as the ruling party prepares for a major organisational overhaul at the national level ahead of Assembly elections in states including West Bengal, Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
Nabin will be tasked with leading the party into the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, which are expected to be held amid significant changes such as parliamentary delimitation and the implementation of a 33 per cent women’s quota in Parliament and state Assemblies.
At 45, Nabin is the youngest leader to head the BJP, succeeding J P Nadda, who has held the post since January 2020.
Bihar ministerial role
Nabin has held several key portfolios in the Nitish Kumar–led Bihar government. He served as Minister for Road Construction from February 2021 to August 2022 and again from February 2025 to December 2025. Between March 2024 and February 2025, he handled the Urban Development and Housing department along with the Law and Justice ministry.
