‘Inaccuracies’ in text, ‘mic switched off’: Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi declines to read out inaugural address, walks out of Assembly

He stated that the Governor's microphone was reportedly switched off repeatedly, preventing him from speaking.

Tamil Nadu Governor RN RaviBy digressing from the speech or walking out of the Assembly during the special address protocols, both the governors have shown disregard for the constitutional provisions and allegiance to the Centre.

Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi skipped delivering his customary inaugural address and walked out of the state assembly on Tuesday, citing multiple issues.

Alleging “inaccuracies” in the DMK government’s prepared text, Ravi stated that his “mic was switched off” repeatedly, preventing him from speaking.

Following his exit, Lok Bhavan, the office of the Governor of Tamil Nadu, issued a press release explaining why the Tamil Nadu governor “declined” to read out the address.

“The speech contains numerous unsubstantiated claims and misleading statements. Several crucial issues troubling the people are ignored,” it said.

“Claim that the state attracted huge investments to the tune of over 12 lakh crores is far from the truth. Many of the MOUs with prospective investors remain only on paper. Actual investment is hardly a fraction of it. Investment data show that Tamil Nadu is becoming less attractive for investors. Until four years ago Tamil Nadu, among the states, was the fourth largest recipient of foreign direct investment. Today it is struggling to remain at the sixth,” the press release added.

The Lok Bhavan alleged that the “National Anthem is yet again insulted and the fundamental Constitutional duty disregarded.”

“Atrocities against Dalits and sexual violence against Dalit women is sharply increasing. However, it is totally bypassed,” the statement read.

Chief Minister M K Stalin hit out at the Governor for “walking out in violation of tradition and ethos”.

He later steered a resolution stating that the English version of the address was assumed to have been read.

“The governor walked out in violation of traditions and ethos. In the state government prepared address, there is no provision for the governor to include his views or say something else,” Stalin said.

He further accused Ravi of “deliberately” making such a move and said that his action “amounts to insulting the House.”
