Chandigarh is set to generate clean energy from waste as the upcoming Compressed Biogas (CBG) plant at Dadumajra will process 200 tonnes per day of segregated organic municipal solid waste and 30 tonnes per day of cow dung, in strict compliance with Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) norms.
The land earmarking ceremony for the project was held on Monday, marking a major step towards scientific waste management and renewable energy generation in the city.
UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria, who was the chief guest at the event, said cities must move away from traditional dumping practices and adopt circular economy models where waste is treated as a valuable resource. He emphasised that scientific waste management and renewable energy solutions are essential for environmental protection and public health.
Calling the transformation of the Dadumajra dumping ground a proud moment for Chandigarh, the Governor said the project would serve as a model for urban local bodies across the country. He congratulated Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) for partnering in the initiative and described the conversion of waste into vehicle-grade biogas as a forward-looking and sustainable approach.
Kataria appreciated the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation for successfully carrying out bioremediation of legacy waste, a process that began in 2019. He said nearly 28 acres of land had been reclaimed, significantly reducing pollution, foul odour and environmental hazards in the area.
The Governor said the CBG plant is being established under the Design, Build, Finance and Operate (DBFO) model, involving no financial investment by the Municipal Corporation, including operation and maintenance costs. The project will also include a mandatory 33 per cent green belt.
He directed the Forest and Municipal Corporation officials to prepare a comprehensive landscaping and plantation plan for the reclaimed land, including green buffers, jogging tracks, children’s play areas and open spaces. He also announced that a large-scale plantation drive would be launched from the site in July 2026.
Chandigarh Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla said, “The CBG plant offers a win-win solution by addressing waste management challenges while producing clean energy. The Rs 125-crore project will deliver long-term environmental and public health benefits, including reduced methane emissions and lower dependence on fossil fuels.”
