Teachers to hold dharna

Teachers from the degree and junior college sections of LU & MV College in Andheri (East) have decided to hold a dharna at Azad Maidan on Wednesday, April 22 between 2 pm and 5 pm to protest the hardships faced by teachers in the college.

A press release issued by the Bombay University College Teachers Union and the Mumbai Junior College Teachers’ Union said the affected teachers have been agitating for the past four months against unwarranted and illegal changes brought about in the the process of signing the daily muster of the teaching staff by the principal. “The teachers will also protest the callous attitude of the principal who has withheld their salaries on the ground that they did not sign the muster; but the fact is that they were working throughout, said MJCTU president Amar J Singh.

BOI programme for the disabled

The Bank of India (BOI) organised an evening of fun for the physically disabled on April 18 at Raja Shivaji Vidyalaya at Dadar TT. A partof the celebrations to celebrate India’s fifty years of Independence, the bank believes that the lesser privileged section of the society has the grit to face all odds and become a part of society. The Bank also has to its credit, over 500 physically handicapped persons as its employees. Today’s function was compered by handicapped persons themselves.

`Pollution Under Control’ year

Inspired by the awareness drive against the evil of environment pollution declared by Sheriff Sardar Kulwant Singh Kohli, Maharashtra Rajya Truck Tempo Tankers Bus Vahatuk Mahasangh has decided to observe this year as the `Pollution under Control Year-1998′.Various organisations affiliated with the Mahasangh will organise seminars, workshops, training awareness programmes throughout the State. The transport operators will also educate members to maintain road worthy vehicles and launch a drive against petrol pumps selling adulterated fuels especially diesel which causes environment pollution. The inaugural function washeld on April 16 where M B Shah, chief justice of Maharashtra, was the chief guest.

Rail services disrupted

The breaking of an overhead wire between Vikhroli and Ghatkopar delayed suburban trains on the main line today evening. The incident occurred at 5.15 pm, resulting in a jam that delayed services by at least half-an-hour. Central railway authorities said the services were normalised by 9 pm.
