Essay contest on dowry system

  • The National Commission for Women has organised an essay competition on Ill effects of Dowry System8217; on Sunday, January 24 between 11 am and 2 pm. The competition, to be held at the Vidyapeeth Vidyarthi Bhavan B8217; Road, Churchgate, is open to students between 16 and 24 years of age studying in the senior and post-graduate levels. The essay should be approximately 4,000 to 5,000 words in length and can be in Hindi, English or Marathi. Three of the best essays will be sent to the National Commission for Women for the final round of selections. Those who wish to sign up should do so at the above address by January 22.   • Nature training camp at Karnala

  • WWF-INDIA will hold a training camp at the Karnala Bird Sanctuary between January 29 and 31. WWF is also organising a nature orientation camp at Dudhani Reserve Forest at Dadra and Nagar Haveli from February 6 to 9. For details, call on 2078105.
  • Fort Walks released

  • Fort Walks 8212; Around Bombay8217;s Fort Area, a book co-authored by Sharda Dwivedi and Rahul Mehrotra was released recently.
  • The book is written in an attempt to encourage people to explore the city on foot and lists 10 walking tours around the Fort area together with its history and present state of historic landmarks.

    8220;This is our third book on Bombay and the feelings are the same. It8217;s like having given birth to a baby,8221; said Dwivedi. 8220;Allmajor cities of the world have their own walking tours. I thought it was time we did something about Bombay. It is not just the cement concrete of the structures, it is the people who made them and the city that are important. I hope people appreciate it otherwise there is no hope for this city,8221; she said.

    The release of the book costing Rs 300 was part of the Max Touch Cultural Heritage series. 8220;Sharada8217;s and Rahul8217;s attempts to bring to the fore the historical and cultural uniqueness of this city is heartening,8221; said Asim Ghosh, CEO and MD Hutchison Max Telecom Ltd.

    ANGC flays strike by college teachers

  • The Association of Non-Government Colleges, Mumbai, has criticised the indefinite strike by junior college teachers. 8220;It8217;s high time they called off the agitation in the interest of the students,8221; said association president Principal M G Shirahatti on Monday.
  • At a meeting with Education Minister Sudhir Joshi on Friday, ANGC and the SNDT Women8217;s University Principals8217; Associationexpreseed doubts about the feasability of disciplinary action taken against the striking teachers and suggested setting up of a committee to discuss the issues which had prompted the strike. The government should take action on the panel8217;s report without delay, they added.

    Mgmt centre by British Council

  • The British Council in Mumbai will now have a Management Centre which will include counselling facilities, reference books for students and Internet facilities. The centre will be inaugurated on January 22 at 6.45 pm at the British Council Library. Sharu Rangnekar, consultant will speak on Management in the Next Millenium8217;, and the David Buckle, chairperson of the British Business Group, Mumbai will be chief guest.
