Teachers burn GR on pay scales

Striking members of the Mumbai Junior College Teachers8217; Union burnt a copy of the Government Resolution GR on their pay-scales this afternoon at Azad Maidan. Nearly 35,000 teachers have been on strike since December 10. About 15,000 junior college teachers will also stage a morcha at the Vidhan Sabha at Nagpur on December 17 to express their dissatisfaction over the disparity in pay scales.

The Women8217;s India Trust WIT has announced a special Christmas offer of 10 per cent on all purchases over Rs 500 at an exhibition at Shilpi Kendra opposite Regal Cinema at Colaba on December 17, 18 and 19, between 11 am and 7 pm. The discount is also being offered at WIT8217;s Tardeo and Mahim outlets.

Pensioners8217; meet at Vashi

The Atomic Energy Retirees8217; Welfare Association AERWA has organised a meeting on December 17 Thursday of central pensioners to herald the year 1999, declared by the UNO as the year of the international year of older persons8217;.

During theday-long programme starting at 9.30 am at New Mumbai Kannada Sangh, Vashi behind Vashi main bus depot, representatives from various pensioners8217; organisations will speak on issues relating to pension. AERWA will also hold its half-yearly general body meeting to discuss various issues like family pension, revision problems, pensioners8217; fund, IT, social security, medicare needs and old age homes etc, according to K V Raghavendra, general secretary, AERWA.

Workshop on locality management

WWF-India has arranged a half-day workshop on December 19 on Advanced Locality Management8217;, involving citizens8217; participation for better maintenance of streets with the help of the BMC. The workshop will be held at V C Gurukul School, Tilak Road, Ghatkopar, between 3 pm and 6 pm. For details, call on 2075142 or 2068105.

Exhibition on home science

An exhibition on home science as a career option will be held on December 21 and 22 by Dr B M Nanavati College of Home Science and Nanavati Junior College ofHome Science under the management of Seva Mandal Education Society at the college premises. The exhibition aims at removing misconseptions associated with cooking and home making.

Israeli Ambassador8217;s visit

As part of the 50th year celebrations of Israel8217;s independence, Dr Yehoyada Haim, Ambassador of Israel to India, will be in the city between December 15 and 16 to participate in the Jewish festival Hanukkah. Dr Haim will also address a lecture at the Indian Council of World Affairs on December 16 at Godrej Bhavan at 6 pm on Peace Process in West Asia.8217;
