Onions to arrive in two weeks

MUMBAI, November 13: Onion consignments from Iran are expected to arrive in Mumbai within a fortnight to be distributed through the fair price shops across the city. After onion stocks in Mumbai dried up, the Maharashtra State Cooperative Marketing Federation had floated international tenders for supply of onions. Mumbai needs nearly 1000 tonnes of onion a day.

A London-based firm M/s Apeksha is bringing in the consignment of onions which is priced at 405 per metric tonne and are of average quality. The new stock will be released to fair price shop owners who have been allowed to provide these onions at Rs 15 per kg per ration card.

New tech for flyover projects

Bridge-building technology using reinforced soil-retaining walls is almost 40 years old on the global scene, but it is making inroads into India only now. The first large-scale use of this technology in India is being made in the 50 flyover projects being undertaken by the Maharashtra State RoadDevelopment Corporation. 8220;Building the approach to a bridge earlier took around six months, it can now be done in just six days using this technology,8221; M C Bhide, Director General of the Indian Institute of Bridge Engineers told presspersons.

Neglect raises risk of bldg collapse

Negligence and lack of preventive maintenance increases the risk of building collapse, according to experts who had converged for a meet on Lessons from recent building collapses8217;. Ramesh Raikar, CMD, Structural Designers and Consultants Ltd., said that adding a false ceiling or an air-conditioner, a balcony, a makeshift water-tank or redoing your plumbing or electric work could put the lives of all in the building in danger.

Left Front plans morcha

The Left Front comprising Communist Party of India Marxist, Peasant Workers Party and Communist Party of India CPI have planned a statewide red flag8217; morcha on November 17 in Mumbai to protest against the rising prices of essential commodities and the generalfailure of the alliance government on all fronts.

Addressing reporters today, CPI M state unit secretary Prabhakar Sanzgiri stated that the Front will demand for Sena-BJP government8217;s resignation as it had 8220;failed to address the common man8217;s problems, the onion crisis and deteriorating law and order situation.8221; He demanded that farmers hit by the wet-drought should be compensated.

BMC to prosecute octroi evaders

The Mayor-in-Council on Thursday approved a proposal to prosecute persons who evaded octroi duty. Mayor Nandu Satam had suggested that the BMC should penalise the evader 10 times the cost of the goods for which duty has not been paid or prosecute the owner.
