AAP has accused the Delhi Police of shielding the accused after videos surfaced of women being allegedly heckled while celebrating Christmas in East of Kailash.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Saturday accused the Delhi Police of not registering an FIR after women were seen in a purported video getting heckled while celebrating Christmas in South Delhi’s East of Kailash.
Even as the police have claimed that the December 21 incident stemmed from “minor and momentary verbal disagreement”, senior AAP leader Saurabh Bhardwaj filed a formal complaint at Amar Colony police station on Saturday. The video, he claimed, shows “goons” threatening, abusing and intimidating women and children wearing Santa Claus caps.
“The whole world has seen these videos. There were threats, abuses and intimidation. Later, the SHO visited the place of incident, still no FIR was filed,” Bhardwaj said, warning that the party would move court if police failed to act. Bhardwaj also alleged pressure from the Centre.
The complaint, according to Bhardwaj, names certain men who he claims are identifiable from the video footage and could be traced through CCTV cameras installed in the market area. He has sought action under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to religious harassment, promoting enmity and outraging the modesty of women.
However, the police have maintained that the episode was neither communal nor serious. In a statement issued on December 21, the South East district police said the incident was a “minor and momentary verbal disagreement” that was “amicably resolved on the spot”, adding that no PCR call or complaint was received. The statement further asserted that preliminary verification showed the issue was “personal and isolated in nature”, that no law-and-order situation arose, and that “there is no communal or religious angle to the incident”.
On Saturday, when contacted again, the South East district Deputy Commissioner of Police declined to comment on the matter.
