Hotelier shot dead

A hotelier was shot dead at Goregaon late Monday night. Three unidentified persons fired four rounds at Dasu Shetty as he was standing near Canara Bar at Ratna Naka, Goregoan (west) at around 11.15 pm. The forty-year-old Shetty was hit on the face near the right eye and on the chest and hand. He was rushed to Cooper Hospital where he was declared dead before admission.

Plea against new notaries

The appointment of 36 notaries in Maharashtra by the state and central government has been challenged by a group of Kolhapur-based lawyers in a writ petition filed in Bombay High Court.

Earlier, this petition had been heard by the division bench headed by Justice Ashok Agarwal. The state and Central government had been directed to file affidavits in this regard by September 21. However, the affidavits were not filed. The matter will now come up before the bench of Justices B N Srikrishna and S S Nijjar.

According to the petitioners, state and Central government have notfulfilled the legal conditions before making the appointments. The lawyers stated the appointments were not in accordance with the rule book. Moreover, lawyers who have not even completed 10 years in the profession have been appointed notaries, the petition alleges. In some regions, 70-year-old have been made notaries, it added.

Youth stabbed at Andheri

An eighteen-year-old youth was stabbed to death at Andheri (west) on Monday afternoon. According to the police, a quarrel erupted over a stall at Wireless Road in which Ibrahim Sholapuri (17) and his accomplice Rafiq Ibrahim (22) stabbed Tausim Qureshi (18). Qureshi was rushed to Cooper Hospital, where he was declared dead before admission.

Singing festival at SNDT

The SNDT Women’s university is hosting `West Zone Inter University Community Singing Festival Tarang 1998′ on October 14 and 15. The festival has been organised by the Association of Indian Universities and sponsored by Department of Youth Affairs and Sports, Ministry of HRD,Government of India.
