WR has new CPRO

Vinod K Asthana has taken over as Chief Public Relations Officer of the Western Railway, replacing R K Tandon. Prior to this, Asthana held the post of Senior Divisional Operations Manager, Mumbai Central. Tandon has been promoted as Chief Commercial Manager (Rates and Marketing), WR.

French I-Day celebrations

French Independence Day will be celebrated on July 14 by students from French language departments of different city colleges, including Elphinstone, Sophia’s, St Xavier’s, Jaihind, Poddar. The function will be held at 3 pm at the Cercle Litteraire, Bibliotheque Dinshaw Petit, 2nd floor, Jatia Chambers, 60 VB Gandhi Marg, Behind Rhythm house, Kalaghoda. The programme includes a fashion show, skit, dances and music with bilingual commentary.

Vedic culture course in English

A correspondence course of Vedic culture in English has been started in July. From July to April, a 16-page booklet will be mailed every month on themes including religion, Vedicliterature, and rebirth. There will be a set of five questions, whose answers have to be mailed to Dr Somdev Shastri, D-309, Milton Apartments, Juhu, Koliwada, Mumbai-49. The participants who send the thre best answers will receive prize money of Rs 251, Rs 151 and Rs 101 respectively. Participants who send 40 per cent right answers will receive certificates.

Pirated cassettes seized

Acting on a tip off from investigators of the Indian Music Industry, a police team led by PSI Bhagwan of D B Marg police station raided a godown at Gandhi Bhawan, off Lamington Road and seized over 5,600 pirated cassettes. The owner Ramesh Sahu has been arrested.

Cloth merchant looted at Mahim

Five unidentified men robbed a cloth merchant of goods worth more than Rs 90,000 from his Mahim shop on Sunday evening. The men approached the shop owner and his servant at around 5.30 pm and asked for goods worth Rs 23,000. After paying up Rs 14,000, they then asked for material worth Rs 40,000. As the servant wasloading the material in a taxi parked outside the shop, the robbers threatened the owner and his servant at gunpoint and looted cash and a gold chain worth Rs 97,650.
