Builder held for attack on tenants
Thane police tonight arrested a builder and 18 hooligans who allegedly beat up tenants occupying tenements in a building at Wagle Estate, Thane. Police sources said the builder, Raju Savant, had purchased old chawls with a view to developing and constructing buildings on the plot, with an understanding that the old tenants would be given flats. But he didn8217;t honour the contract. The tenants moved court, which ordered that status quo be maintained and allowed tenants to occupy the flats. Today, in a bid to evict them, the builder came with hooligans armed with choppers, revolvers, iron rods and hockey sticks. They pulled residents out of the flats and beat them. Six persons have been hospitalised, police said.
