Three businessmen have been detained under Cofeposa for siphoning off more than Rs 50 crore in foreign exchange through Standard Chartered Bank under the garb of importing material. The detention of Sevantilal Doshi, Kamlesh Shah and Ashwin Patel was confirmed by the advisory board during its meeting on February 26 last, Enforcement Directorate sources said.

Gunman fires in Khar hotel

A gunman, believed to be member of the Dawood gang, opened fire at a busy Khar restaurant on Tuesday evening. Confirming the incident, the additional commissioner of police north west region Dr Satya Pal Singh said firing could be to scare the hotelier into paying up protection money to the gang.

President okays bill on Rent Act

President K R Narayanan on Tuesday gave his assent to a Maharashtra Amendment Bill extending the Bombay Rent Control Act beyond its expiry on March 31 by a year and hiking the rent by five per cent, according to Minister of state for Housing, Raj Purohit. The presidential assentconverted the bill into an act, Purohit stated in a release.
