
Bharadwaj challenges EC directive
Television actor-producer-director and former BJP MP from Jamshedpur, Nitish Bharadwaj, moved the Bombay High Court today against the Election Commission8217;s EC notification for the temporary suspension of films/ serials, during the election period, of persons linked to political parties.The petition has been filed in anticipation of the EC taking episodes of his Geeta Rahasya off the air in case he does contest the election this year.
Bhardwaj, who is both acting and directing in the film, argues that though the EC is empowered under Article 324 of the Constitution to conduct elections, they are expected to be reasonably exercised.
The petition is scheduled for urgent hearing tomorrow.
Cops search for real candidate
Police are on the lookout for constable, Shrikant Tawde, who made a dummy candidate take a physical fitness test for him at the Naigaum parade ground on Monday. Tawde had earlier cleared the written examination for the post ofsub-inspector under the Maharashtra Public Service Commission but feared he would not pass the fitness test as he was injured in an accident a couple of months ago.
Sub-Inspector Chandrakant Thale with the Bhoiwada police station said the supervisor noticed that the photograph on the application form did not tally with the examinee. Umesh Sawant, a relative of Tawde, has been arrested for cheating and impersonation.
Taurani cannot leave country
The application of Tips Cassettes proprietor, Ramesh Taurani, an accused in the Gulshan Kumar murder case, seeking permission to leave the country on a business trip has been rejected by the Bombay High Court today.
The court refused permission on the ground that evidence could be tampered with since prime accused, Nadeem Saifee, is in London at present. While presenting the police8217;s case, the advocate claimed Taurani wanted to leave the country as he did not want to face the trial in India.
