Purported videos of shattered glass and debris at the Hero Honda Chowk underpass on National Highway 48, which were widely shared on social media on Monday, led commuters to express concern whether the structure had suffered infrastructural damage.

However, the Gurgaon Police said on Thursday said it has apprehended two minors boys for hurling stones and broken tiles at vehicles taking the underpass, with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) also clarifying that the road had not suffered any damage.

After the purported videos were viral, showing damaged windshields and bodywork of several cars, the NHAI closed both sides of the underpass on Monday night in consultation with traffic police, citing safety concerns.

The closure led to significant traffic congestion on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway on Tuesday morning. The underpass serves as a critical connectivity hub linking Delhi to industrial areas like Manesar and major roads in Gurgaon.

After a detailed inspection by the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) on Tuesday morning and further consultation with traffic police, the underpass was reopened to traffic at 2 pm.

Based on a complaint filed on Tuesday at the Sadar police station by a commuter whose car was damaged while he was driving home from Sector 48 on Monday, an FIR was registered against unknown persons. A probe led police identify the two juveniles on Wednesday.

During questioning, police said the minors admitted that they threw stones at moving vehicles. “In accordance with Juvenile Justice Act provisions, the boys will be produced before a Child Welfare Committee for counseling. These incidents not only damage property but also endanger lives,” an officer said.

In a statement posted on X on Wednesday, the NHAI said, “Some anti-social elements pelted broken tiles and stones into the underpass at Hero Honda Chowk, creating a serious safety hazard for moving vehicles.” Several vehicles were damaged and the act posed a grave risk of accidents, it added.

“No injuries were reported and traffic has since returned to normal at the chowk,” an officer said.
