Cabbies for withdrawal of hike in tax

  • The Mumbai Taximen8217;s Union has taken strong exception to the state government8217;s move to increase their professional tax from Rs 400 to Rs 750 per year. 8220;This is legalised extortion, nothing less,8221; said the General Secretary of the Union A L Quadros. He claimed that the taximen would be holding a demonstration in front of the office of the Professional Tax Commissioner next week in protest against the hike. The union is also preparing to file a writ petition in the courts if the government does not withdraw the hike.
  • RMMS dharna at Bombay House

  • Over 400 activists of the Rashtriya Mill Mazdoor Sangh RMMS, affiliated to the Indian National Trade Union Congress Intuc, today staged demonstrations at Bombay House, the corporate office of Tata Group in south Mumbai. The demonstrators were protesting against the alleged non-payment of salaries to the workers of Swadeshi Mill. An RMMS statement claimed that activists gheraoed the Tata Groupchairman Ratan Tata. However, the same was denied by a company spokesperson.

VSNL has also mirrored the site Cricket.org on its servers in India to provide flash access to the site. At the launch today, Amitabh Kumar, acting chairperson and managing director, said the company wanted to bring the excitement of the World Cup to the largest internet base of over three lakh users in India. The World Cup is generating a lot of excitement on internet and thousands of hits are being recorded on various sites.
