
Five lifeguards for Aksa
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has appointed five local persons to watch the Aksa beach in Malad. Two check posts will be set up and four hoardings will caution the visitors against the dangers of swimming. Deputy Mayor Gopal Shetty visited the beach today to chalk out preventive measures in the wake of 36 deaths reported between January and August this year. The Gramast Seva Mandal had requested that 10 locals be appointed since they were familiar with the area, the tides, sinking spots, shifting sands, among others.
Pollution at Tarapur
Residents of six villages of the Tarapur-MIDC area have decided to join hands and take the authorities to task for neglecting the plight of villagers and workers because of high level of pollution. Under the banner of Tarapur Environmental Group, they have decided to move court against MIDC and MPCB as the industries do not follow pollution-norms. Be it air, water or even soil everything is polluted in the cluster of six villages, which include, Pan, Salvad, Kumbavali, Temberu and Kurgaon. Most of the residents in the villages of Tarapur-MIDC area suffer from bronchial and digestive problems, TEG spokesman said.
Housewife8217;s thesis on Sena
A Thane housewife Kalpana Hazare earned her doctorate on the topic Shiv Sena and the BMC 8216;, a thesis which studies the way in which Shiv Sena grew from a local party into a state party and subsequently graduated into a national party. The thesis dealt at length on the functioning of the BMC and the way Sena evolved and established itself, using its power in the civic body, she said.
ACB traps BMC official
An official of the BMC today arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau while accepting bribe. According to the ACB sources, civic official Dayanand Patil visited a hosiery shop on the Fashion Street in Fort area on July 15 and demanded bribe of Rs 600 from the owner for violating the road line earmarked for the shoppers.
