M Y Kadam missing from hospital

Manohar Kadam, inspector with the State Reserve Police Force SRP who had ordered the firing on the mob at Ramabai Nagar on July 11, 1997, today failed to depose before the Justice S D Gundewar commission. According to police, Kadam was missing from the Police Hospital, Naigaum, where he was admitted last week for some illness. However, sources said Kadam has got himself admitted in a private hospital at Pune. Last week, Justice Gundewar had allowed Kadam to remain absent from the hearing. New dates fixed for his deposition were January 21, 22 and 23. Dr N C Gavhane of the Naigaum hospital, when contacted late on Wednesday night said she wasn8217;t aware of any such patient admitted in the hospital and would be able to confirm only after going through the hospital records.

One held for Masjid clash

One person was arrested for distributing controversial pamphlets8217; outside Jama Masjid that led to clashes between two sects of Muslim communities leaving two persons dead on Sunday, police said. Asif Palwala 29, an active member of Niaz-E-Hussain committee, was arrested on Tuesday night for distributing the controversial papers on offering namaz and charged with disturbing communal harmony and rioting, police said. The accused, a follower of Barelvi sect, was today produced in a city metropolitan court and remanded to police custody till January 27.

2 BMC officials held for graft

Two licence inspectors of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation BMC were arrested by Anti-Corruption Bureau ACB for extorting hafta from hawkers at Dadar TT. According to the BMC public relations department, ACB sleuths laid a trap at Dadar TT area and nabbed one Surajbali R Prajapati 45, while he was extorting bribes from hawkers. Surajbali8217;s interrogation revealed that he was working as an agent of two licence officers at the G North ward office of BMC. However, the police said that the officers were yet to be arrested.
