Save Borivli National Park rally

The Save Borivli National Park8217; cycle rally led by film star Juhi Chawla and artist M F Hussain is being organised on Sunday to demand removal of a large scale of encroachments, anti-socials, and illegal quarrying from National Park.

Himanshi Prem of Wild Holidays, organisers of the campaign, said about 10,000 people, including school children and nature lovers, will take part in the rally starting from National Park and converging on Gateway of India. They will address the public at Gateway to highlight the threats the park is facing.

Gundewar commission

A police officer today testified before Gundewar commission that some unidentified persons had desecrated Dr B R Ambedkar8217;s bust at Ramabai Nagar on July 11 last and his colleague had told him about local leaders preventing cops from removing the offensive garland of chappals. Senior inspector of Pant Nagar police station, Bapusaheb Yadav, affirmed in an affidavit that he had seen a 5000-strong violent mob sporadically pelting stones and setting on fire articles of the police chowky located in close proximity of Ambedkar8217;s bust.

8220;I tried to move towards the place of arson, but the mob obstructed my police party. Hence I warned them and then opened a mild cane charge to disperse the unruly mob. The mob retreated, and on my entry into the locality, I noticed they had demolished the chowky and torched some articles contained therein,8221; he said. The infuriated mob then went to the Eastern Express highway and started pelting stones on passing vehicles.

PI dies during I-Day rehearsal

A young Police Inspector, Anil Jhankar, today collapsed and died on the spot at the police parade ground of Naigaon Police Training Centre, while rehearsing for the Republic Day parade. The cause of his death is still not known. Jhankar was reportedly heading the rehearsals at the parade ground at around 9.30 am on Monday, when he suddenly collapsed without even asking for help. He was rushed to Naigaon police hospital by his colleagues, but was declared dead before admission.
