MUMBAI, SEPT 22: Mulund Commerce MCC have bagged the Mumbai University inter-college chess title with a round to spare. MCC had notched 22.5 points after six rounds at close of play today, having beaten Vivekanand Engg and NM Commerce 4-0 and 3-1 in the fifth and penultimate sixth round respectively. That gave them an unassailable 7.5 points lead over second-placed Pendharkar 15.

The silver medals are up for grabs, as NM Commerce 14 trail Pendharkar by only a point. The competition is being held at DAV, Bhandup and is conducted by Bombay Chess Association.

In the women8217;s individual event, second seed Devashri Mhatre 5.5 of Vartak, Vasai gained the lead after defeating Parinita Malkhede CHM in the sixth round. Top seed Malti Vhatwar abd Manisha Tawde are in joint second place, with five points each. The top two seeds face each other in the final round tomorrow, with Devashree needing just a draw.

St Andrew8217;s score

St Andrew8217;s College, Bandra, defeated NR Swamy 25-15 26-24 to advance to the fourth round in the Mumbai University Inter-college volleyball tournament, held at Somaiya College today.

Shalmali, Rujuta eye double

Shalmali Inamdar and Rujuta Rege were in line for a double each as the MIG District ranking table tennis tournament wound its way to the closing rounds. While Shalmali entered the finals of the girls and women8217;s events, Rujuta made it to the summit of the girls and sub-junior girls categories.
