VADODARA, June 17: The 16-member committee appointed by M S University Vice-Chancellor Anil Kane to look into the University Grants Commission8217;s proposals for student union elections has voted in favour of continuing the elections, but said free and fair polling was necessary.

It has ruled out the introduction of the nomination system, as suggested by committee convener V M Shah. The committee will meet again on June 25, by which time it is expected to evolve the final recommendations.

Some members have suggested that elections of the class representatives, faculty representatives and university general secretary and vice-president be held on different dates. A few have said there should be a method whereby students of all faculties could participate in the election process.

One of the members pointed out, 8220;At present the representations are primarily from the faculty of Arts and Commerce. There was very few representations from other faculties.8221;

They also suggested that since the Commerce faculty had the largest number of students, it should be divided into three units, one of which should be represented by a girl.

Among other suggestions were representations for university toppers as well as students who have represented the university in a sport. 8220;This is the only way to encourage sports activities. Representations from good students will also raise academic standards8221;, said a committee member.

Announcing that the committee would take some time to come to a conclusion, Kane said he had given it a month to look into all the possibilities.
