The authorities have also decided to check students8217; identity cards and allow in only those who were registered students of the university. As another step, they have decided to scrutinise the records of all student leaders and allow the nomination papers of only those who have not been involved in any campus violence or rampages in the past.

One of the university deans, who attended the meeting with Kane, said, 8220;The university authorities are going to be very selective when candidates file their nomination papers for this election.8221; He added that as had happened in the past, not everyone would be allowed to contest the elections.

Meanwhile, five of the 14 students against whom Chief Warden of Hostels N L Singh had lodged an FIR on Saturday surrendered to the police on Monday. All of them had been absconding since the police report had been lodged.

Talking to Express Newsline university general secretary Prakash Verma, however, said, 8220;When we went to file a counter-complaint against Singh, we were arrested by the police on Monday.8221;

When asked about the decision of the university authorities, Verma said that as long as no charges were proved against those whom complaints had been lodged, the university authorities could not prevent anybody from contesting elections.
