It couldn8217;t have come at a more opportune time. The two memorandums of understanding MoUs 8212; one between the Indian and Chinese governments and the other between the two National Olympic Committees 8212; signed today could have far-reaching effects on Indian sports.
The MoUs take effect straightaway and the Sports Authority of India SAI from the Indian side and the Human Resource Development Centre under general Administration of sports in China will be the two nodal agencies to deal with with various exchange programmes that the two nations are envisaging.
A Chinese delegation led by its sports minister Lie Peng, who is also the president of the Chinese Olympic Committee, signed two sets of documents to exchange sports teams for bilateral and multilateral competitions and training camps. On behalf of the Indian government, Prithviraj Chavan, Minister of State in the PMO, signed the first document while Suresh Kalmadi did the honours on behalf of the Indian Olympic Association.
Besides the exchange of sportspersons and sporting personnel, the MoU covers enhancement of co-operation in sports between the two countries.
The two will be guided by the general principle of reciprocity in all such exchanges. The Chinese side indicated sharing of their expertise in use of scientific methods for training athletes; sports academics and advances made in detecting doping.
The visit of the delegation and the signing of MoUs assume greater significance in the backdrop of China conducting the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and India preparing for Commonwealth Games 2010.
