Apropos of Sucheta Dalal8217;s article 8216;Killing the initial public offering market again8217; IE, September 27, a market-based solution to the problem of whether private investors should tender an upfront amount for shares in an initial public offering IPO or not is for private and public sector banks to offer escrow services. The escrow service would simply hold the upfront amount of private investors and remit the money forward to the IPO firm for investors who are allocated shares and refund the money to the rest. The service can be offered free to investors, with the escrow service being compensated by earning interest on the amount collected in the interim period. Private investors who have good banking relationships with their bankers could get escrow services without explicitly having to send the upfront money 8212; the rest of the investors would be required to actually send the upfront amount for escrow services. This solution would save on investment banking costs of managing IPOs without leading to an increase in flipping of share allocations.

Left strike

8226; The Left parties have shot themselves in the foot 8216;Plan panel gets tough, sacks all expert groups8217;, IE, October 1. We will now have in place a less than transparent process with the Planning Commission accepting or rejecting advice from any source it chooses without an open and meaningful debate. The Left parties have done themselves and the country a great disservice.

Doctor8217;s gender

8226; I am astonished at the airing of a controversy that could have an adverse impact on the functioning of the armed forces. During my service in the army, my wife, like thousands of female family members, was many a time examined by male gynaecologists. My children were delivered under the direct care of a renowned male gynaecologist. Even in the civil field, some of the most renowned gynaecologists have been male. The medical profession and ethics do not differentiate between male and female doctors in the discharge of their functions.

Little master, big deal

8226; My advice to the media about Sachin is: leave him alone 8216;Elbow still in way, he says he can8217;t bat more than 15 balls8217;, IE, October 1. I think it was Sanjay Manjrekar who said that Sachin Tendulkar is a great batter but a poor leader. I entirely agree. Leaders are born, not made. Sachin8217;s inability to learn from experience and observation was clear from the very beginning of his stint as captain. Let us not seek his views on the batting order or bowling options. Just ask him where he would like to bat and give him complete freedom to bat the way he likes. That is, when he is fully fit and ready to roar!
