MUMBAI, February 6: Pivotals showed a mixed trend on the Bombay Stock Exchange BSE today on alterantive bouts of buying and selling. A few scrips moved further mainly on short covering and fresh buying support by foreign institutional investors FIIs. Others closed with small losses on absence of speculative support. Being the last session for the current trading cycle, most of the operators were squaring up their position. The volume of business remained below normal.

The BSE sensitive index moved between 3374.04 and 3338.09 before closing at 3366.70, with a small gain of 9.22 points compared to the previous level of 3357.48. The BSE-100 index gained by 0.90 point to 1448.88 as against the previous close of 1447.98.

Despite encouraging results, Castrol dropped from Rs 691.50 to close at Rs 670 with a net loss of Rs 15 on profit taking. SBI, Telco, Tata Steel and ACC also remained subdued.

The total turnover amounted to Rs 886.45 crore. ITC was the leader among the top five traded scrips with aturnover of Rs 290.24 crore, followed by Tata Tea Rs at 108.30 crore, Castrol at Rs 93.98 crore, SBI at Rs 75.88 crore and Bajaj Auto at Rs 44.17 crore.

On the NSE share prices rose further marginally on increased buying. The NSE-50 index, after a steadyAtilde;iquest;start at 976.10, improved to 981.20. Later, it fell to 971.90 and closed at 977.65, showing a mild improvement of 1.55 points over the last close of 976.10. The Midcap index started better at 1090.50 but declined to close at 1081.30, disclosing a fall of 9.00 points from the last close. The market witnessed a total turnover of Rs 1325.88 crore.
