Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 15: Nisha Millet defied the murky conditions to set a new National record in the 50 metres freestyle as curtains came down on the 52nd National Aquatic championship at Water Works Swimming pool here today.Nisha8217;s record was the only high point of a rather dull evening in which proceedings looked rather pedestrian. Ostensibly, this meet will be remembered for Nisha8217;s golden splash 10 gold medals and three national records. It was in the fitness of things that the last event of the meet turned out to be memorable one for Nisha as she realised one of her burning ambitions today. 8220;It gives me great personal satisfaction to break Sangeeta8217;s National mark,8221; she said after the race.
Nisha8217;s sister Reshma turned out to be her unlikely foe as Reshma matched her more illustrious sister stroke for stroke in then first 20 metres. However, Nisha pulled ahead at 30 metres into the race finishing at least two strokes ahead of Reshma in a new time of 0.28.01 seconds. Sangeetha Rani Puri8217;s old national mark stood at 0.28.06 seconds.
Nisha took her ninth gold 20 minutes before this race in the newly introduced 50 metres backstroke. Once she hit the water first, Nisha8217;s victory was a forgone conclusion. Tashina Singh finished second well ahead of Rupali Dey of Bengal.
