NASHIK, July 23: The war of words between local Brahmins and Marathas, triggered off by the remarks of Maratha historian M M Deshmukh, continues, with the Maratha Seva Sangh flexing its muscles and threatening an agitation.
Deshmukh accused Brahmins of tricking the mighty Marathas into subordination by exploiting their blind religious faith and patriotism at a meeting on Sunday. He also passed remarks on Saint Ramdas Swami, branding him as an agent of Brahminism. He urged the Marathas to unite as their one per cent unity would bring them in power in the state and five per cent, in the country.
State health minister Dr Daulatrao Aher was present at the meeting and in his speech lamented that political affiliations were the stumbling blocks in Maratha unity.
On Monday, Brahmins in Nashik held two meetings, condemning Dr Aher a Maratha and demanding his resignation as he had betrayed them by first getting elected on their votes and then joining Brahmin-bashers.
On Tuesday night, the Maratha Seva Sangh, co-organiser of the meeting of Marathas, retaliated by stating that Deshmukh was a learned historian and his claims were based on historical facts. The Sangh pointed out that the Brahmins should apologise for insulting Deshmukh.
