SINDHUDURG, SEPT 25: The Sindhudurg police this week arrested Kamlesh Satam, an alleged sharpshooter of the Chhota Rajan gang and accused in the September 1997 murder of Chhota Shakeel gang member Ismail Malbari in the Vikhroli court.

Satam was apprehended while attempting to escape in a State Transport bus along with two others accused of looting a jewellery shop in Mapusa, Goa.

The Sindhudurg police received a message from their Goa counterparts that on September 18, ten dacoits had attempted to loot a jewellery shop at Mapusa, in which the shop owner and a policeman were seriously wounded.

The dacoits then escaped in two Maruti cars. Subsequently, all check posts and entry points in Sindhudurg were on alert.

At around 6.30 pm on September 19, head constable V B Naik and constable H R Sawant, who were checking the Redy-Belgaum State Transport bus at the Malegaon check post, noticed that one of the two passengers occupying the rear seat was injured. When the duo were asked to alight, Kamlesh Satamattempted to fire at Naik with a Chinese make 0.30 Mauser pistol.

But Satam missed, and Naik escaped, but managed to stop Satam.

The other accused escaped in the ensuing scuffle.
