North Carolina, December 2: World 100-metre record holder Maurice Greene has laid down the challenge for a pre-Olympic 200-metre race against Michael Johnson, the double-world record holder he hopes to beat at next year8217;s Sydney Games.
8220;Let8217;s do it. Let8217;s show everybody what they want to see,8221; Greene said yesterday from Los Angeles when asked if he would like to race Johnson ahead of next year8217;s Olympic trials.
With both going for the 200-metre gold at Sydney, any clash between the world record holders would be a highlight of the pre-Olympic season.
Greene said he 8220;hopes8221; a race with Johnson can be arranged 8212; either in a high-profile meet or made-for-TV event. But he isn8217;t counting on it.
8220;Johnson 8230; It8217;s like we8217;re playing cards,8221; Greene said. 8220;I8217;m ready to play mine, but he8217;s not going to play his hand until he feels like he8217;s ready. He8217;s holding all the cards in his hand. Whenever he gets ready, he knows where I am and how to contact me.8221;
Renaldo Nehemiah, director of Worldwide Trackand Field for Gold Medal Management, which represents Johnson, said, 8220;If they happen to meet at the same venue, obviously they will race each other. But it is not in Michael8217;s plans to strategically have to run against Maurice Greene.8221;
