
Vijay Samuel Hazare, who led India to their first Test victory, passed away on Saturday afternoon at a private hospital after a prolonged illness. Hazare, 89, had been suffering from intestinal cancer and other ailments. He had been kept on life support.
The Cricket Club of India honoured him with the Lifetime Achievement Award a week ago by former BCCI president Raj Singh Dungarpur at a private ceremony.
BCCI bore the cost of his treatment.
His brother Vivek made his mark in Ranji Trophy. Vijay Hazare is survived by wife Pramila, son Ranjit and two daughters.
