Every moment of life in Mumbai is bliss, for those who love it of course. But most of us do love this amazing city. And knowing it can be more fun — even if one can’t really fathom what it has in store each day. So, here are some more interesting facts on it:

  • The British were not happy with the dowry their Portuguese daughter-in-law brought along with her. This was because Mumbai was a marshy land full of trees, on every available patch of land.
  • Mumbai, like it is today, is thus far removed from what it used to be. In fact, many places in the city get their names from the trees that were found there in plenty.
  • Tamarind lane, near Hutatma Chowk and Hornimon Circle is called so because of the abundance of tamarind trees in the area.
  • Both Boribander (CST) and Borivli take their names from the many Bori trees in the vicinity.
  • Kelevadi and Fanasvadi, in Girgaum (Charni Road), get their names respectively from the banana and jack fruit farms that were there before human settlements.
  • Laburnum Street gets its name from the laburnum trees that were aplenty there.
