
Rio Ferdinand suffered a miserable return to Elland Road on Saturday when a second-half goal by Harry Kewell gave Leeds United a 1-0 victory over his new club Manchester United.
England defender Ferdinand, who moved to Old Trafford for a British record fee of 30 million pounds 46.88 million in July, could do nothing as Australian Kewell headed in a cross by Ian Harte after 66 minutes to settle a feisty encounter.
The victory sent Leeds United to the top of the table on 12 points and inflicted a second premier league defeat in four days on Alex Ferguson8217;s injury-hit side, who were Left to rue a host of missed first-half chances.
Leeds8217; victory was their first in 10 meetings with Manchester United, their fiercest rivals who now have only eight points to show from their first six games. Leeds manager Terry Venables was delighted at how his team, who won 2-0 at Newcastle on Wednesday, recovered after a poor first half.
Meanwhile, champions Arsenal rewrote the record books again. Arsenal8217;s 3-0 victory at Charlton Athletic gave them a two-point lead at the top and meant they have now scored in 45 consecutive Premier League games, breaking Manchester City8217;s 65-year-old top flight record in England.
Elsewhere, Emile Heskey scored a dramatic late winner to give Liverpool a 3-2 victory at Bolton Wanderers and unbeaten Chelsea crushed Newcastle United 3-0. There were also wins for Fulham, West Bromwich Albion and Everton.
Arsenal top the table with 14 points from six games, two clear of Leeds, Chelsea and Liverpool, who all have 12 points. Tottenham Hotspur, who have 10 points, play host to bottom club West Ham United on Sunday.
Charlton started brightly at The Valley but after 44 minutes Patrick Vieira and Dennis Bergkamp linked well to set up Thierry Henry, who drove in his fourth goal of the season from the edge of the area. Reuters
