India will face serious repercussions if it votes to take the Iranian case to the UN Security Council, is the burden of the letter the Left is sending tomorrow to the Prime Minister, sources said.
The Left parties that met in the Capital on Friday decided to tell the government that India should not vote for any International Atomic Energy Agency resolution that proposes to take the Iran issue to the UNSC. It should stand its ground against pressure from the EU and the US, in keeping with an independent foreign policy as outlined in the Common Minimum Programme.
CPI general secretary AB Bardhan said after the meeting, 8216;8216;We should stay away from US moves on Iran and not vote against it.8217;8217; India should exhaust diplomatic options to keep the matter within the IAEA, he said, noting that 8216;8216;there is ample scope for diplomacy8221;.
The letter will focus solely on the Iran issue. That means no mention will be made of the Indo-US agreement on nuclear cooperation, even though the Left has demanded that the government make public the details of the agreement.
