MUMBAI, Nov 22: An audience of over 12,000, and their raucous cheering, provided just the right launch-pad for Vinod Kambli's return to big-time cricket at the Wankhede Stadium this afternoon. The 26-year-old left-hander cracked an unbeaten 90 (61b, 109m, 10x4, 3x6) as Mumbai kick-started their overs-limited campaign with an emphatic seven-wicket victory over a hapless Gujarat.Skipper Sachin Tendulkar too chimed in with a 36-ball 51 (64m, 8x4, 2x6) which saw Mumbai turbo-charging towards the target of 182 in the 26th over. After being asked to judge the fitness for himself by the new Mumbai coach Ashok Mankad, Kambli responded in fine fashion which should go a long way in building his confidence for sterner tests ahead. His right ankle yet enclosed in an air cast, Kambli, wearing shoes of unequal sizes, showed no signs of rustiness in his strokeplay. He had played just two matches in the local circuit during the 227-day hiatus, forced by the ankle injury he sustained while substituting for Indian captainMohammad Azharuddin at Cuttack against Zimbabwe (April 9, 1998) during the tri-nation tourney.Tendulkar, who appeared uncomfortable with the bat, tested a few of them while consuming 13 balls to get off the mark. Soon, he was in his elements which also coincided with the arrival of buddy Kambli, who had replaced opener Rajesh Sutar (9).It was then party time for the spectators. It rained fours and sixes as Tendulkar forced 22 runs (6,4,6,2,4 - all in succession) off medium-pacer Vivek Parikh which was followed by Kambli's onslaught of 15 (6,2,2,4,1) and 14 (2,2,4,6) on left-hand medium-pacers Bhavik Patel and Mihir Sheth.Sheth bore the brunt of the assault as he tried to check a full-blooded straight drive by Kambli and ended up writhing in pain. He didn't bowl again in the match.Gujarat finally got a reprieve from the slug-fest when Tendulkar holed out to Amrish Kotecha, who juggled with the ball before completing the catch. But by then, the Shardashram School ex-students had wreaked havoc with a92-run association in just 7.3 overs.Kambli was also involved in a 70-run alliance with Amol Muzumdar (20). He finally stamped the seal of supremacy with two successive boundaries off off-spinner Bhavin Mehta to overhaul the Gujarat score of 181.Earlier, electing to field after winning the toss, the Mumbai bowlers did little justice to their reputation spraying the ball all over to log a dubious distinction. They gave away 20 no-balls and 19 wides, paving way to a record total of extras (47) in domestic limited-overs cricket. It obliterated Madhya Pradesh's tally of 42 against Railways, who had scored 202, in October 1996.In the event, Mumbai were penalised and had to attain the target in 48 overs. Lanky paceman Abey Kuruvilla reaped rich rewards (4-34) for a probing line.Barring all-rounder Bhavin Mehta (51: 52b, 49m, 7x4), no other Gujarat batsmen showed any sense of application.Mumbai all-rounder Ajit Agarkar, who was indisposed, didn't take part in the match and may skip the four-day RanjiTrophy match commencing tomorrow, according to coach Mankad. The match, while whetting the appetite of spectators, raked in Rs 1.2 lakh for the Mumbai Cricket Association.
