PATIALA, Dec 29: 8220;No sad songs for me,8221; says Jasbir Jassi, the new Punjabi pop star.

Talking to The Indian Express here last night, Jassi said that he did not like to sing sad and tragic songs as 8220;the audiences want entertainment and lively performances and I dont want to sadden their spirits with sad numbers8221;.

8220;More than catchy lyrics and technically savvy music videos, what really matters in a song is the melody. My attempt is to offer such melodious tunes which people can play over and over again, Jassi said.

The talented youngster recounts his family contribution in inculcating an inclination for singing and good music saying, 8220;ours was a joint family and all the children in the family were always competing to outclass each other at singing the traditional jhalla8221;.

His daily practice of about five hours is sacred for him because 8220;a singer can not afford to compromise on his vocal talent, because this is what makes him different from the usual run-of-the-mill crop of singers8221;.

Jassi said that he had decided to incorporate lines from certain other languages in his numbers to help the people of other states identify with his songs. He said his 8220;Dil lai gai kudi Gujrat di8221; had proved to be a hit not only in India but also abroad.

Jassi nostalgically recalled his long days of struggle in Patiala where he worked with the renowned Punjabi theatre artist Harpal Tiwana.
